At A Dickens of a Christmas we love all things to do with our great author and it seems so do the bidders at a charity auction at Christie's in London.
The desk and chair were thought to be used by Charles Dickens to write Great Expectations at his Gad's Hill home. A spokesperson for Christie's said the bidding was extremely fierce with culminating in Irish collector Tom Higgins' bid of £433,250.
Mr Higgins said the items would be given pride of place in his home in Wicklow.
The former journalist, 49, said: "I'm a big Dickens fan, I always have been.
"It's an important piece of literary history."
The beneficiary of the sale is the Great Ormond Street Hospital where Dickens was one of the first patrons and spoke at its first ever fund raiser in 1858.
